Michigan attorney general charges right-wing political operatives with intimidating voters through robocalls

Two notorious right-wing political operatives were charged Thursday for allegedly running a voter suppression operation targeting voters in Michigan, according to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel.

The operatives, Jacob Wohl and Jack Burkman, are accused of orchestrating a series of robocalls aimed at deterring Detroit residents from voting by mail. They are each charged with one count of intimidating voters, one count of conspiracy to commit an election law violation, one count of using a computer to commit the crime of intimidating voters and using a computer to commit the crime of conspiracy. The first two charges each carry a maximum of five years in prison and the latter two charges carry a maximum of seven years in prison.

LONDON (AP) — Julian Assange relayed how he “binge-watched” the suicide of the former Bosnian Croat general in a U.N. courtroom three years ago, a doctor who visited the WikiLeaks founder on several occasions while he was in the Ecuadorian Embassy in London told an extradition hearing Thursday.

Dr. Sondra Crosby, associate professor of medicine at the Boston University School of Medicine, said she noted a visible deterioration in both his mental and physical state over her four visits from Oct. 2017 to the embassy where Assange was living. He had been granted asylum by Ecuador five years earlier over fears of extradition to the U.S. related to his WikiLeaks work.

Sept. 22 (UPI) — In a recorded address Tuesday at the 75th U.N. General Assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump slammed China for its response to COVID-19 in the early weeks of the pandemic.

Trump’s taped remarks were broadcast on the first day of the assembly’s General Debate, along with recorded addresses from other global leaders.

“The Chinese government and the World Health Organization, which is virtually controlled by China, falsely declared that there was no evidence of human-to-human transmission,” Trump said. “The United Nations must hold China accountable for their actions.”

China’s U.N. ambassador, Zhang Jun, said his country’s leadership “resolutely rejects the baseless accusations against China. Zhang introduced Chinese President Xi Jinping’s pre-recorded statement to the U.N. General Assembly.

Washington – The Trump administration is expected to urge Republican state attorneys general on Wednesday to investigate social-media sites over allegations they censor conservatives online, escalating the White House’s war with Silicon Valley at a time when tech giants are increasingly taking action against the president’s most controversial posts.

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed our annual meeting beyond recognition.

But it has made it more important than ever.

In January, I addressed the General Assembly and identified “four horsemen” in our midst — four threats that endanger our common future.

First, the highest global geo-strategic tensions in years.

Second, an existential climate crisis.

UNITED NATIONS, Sep 22 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Tuesday appealed for global solidarity to overcome coronavirus, and again call for a global ceasefire during the pandemic, by the end of the year.

In his centerpiece address to the historic 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Guterres characterized the pandemic from the podium as “not only a wake-up call” but “a dress rehearsal” for challenges to come.

“In an interconnected world, it is high time to recognize a simple truth: solidarity is self-interest. If we fail to grasp that fact, everyone loses”, he said, delivering his annual report on the work of the Organization in a largely empty hall of the 193-member Assembly where social distancing was maintained because of the ongoing pandemic.
