Computer Science BASThe University of Southern Mississippi (USM) is expanding its online catalog with
the Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) BS. With the addition of the Computer
Science (Applied Computer Science) Bachelor’s degree, online students can now uncover
the technical aspects of computer science while realizing their goal of earning a
four-year degree.

“The Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) major at USM will provide students
with the skills needed to design and develop computing solutions to real-world problems,”
says Dr. Sarah Lee, Professor and Director of the School of Computing Sciences and
Computer Engineering. “The Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) major provides
an opportunity for students with an aptitude for math and science to integrate another
content area into their curriculum. For example, a student interested in computing
in public health, biology, or business may apply credits from those areas towards
their BS in Computer Science (Applied Computer Science).”

This is the only Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) Bachelor’s degree in
the state of Mississippi and gives students the flexibility to explore more ways to
use the skills they acquire with USM and apply those skills to various fields. Dr.
Lee continues, “Students who already possess a BS degree in another content area or
started and did not finish a degree in another area, may find this program a flexible
option that will maximize the use of their credits in another content area.”

“The use of computer technology is becoming more and more prevalent in every career,”
Dr. Tom Hutchinson, Dean of Online Learning and Enrollment for the Office of Online
Learning, says. “This program gives students a solid foundation in computer science
and allows the freedom to incorporate their own interests while enjoying the flexibility
of online delivery.”

The online Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) BS is designed to teach the
technical aspects of computer sciences and help students prepare for real-world issues
in their fields. This program admits students for the fall, spring and summer semesters,
and with the online delivery, taking the first steps toward a career in computer science
is more flexible than ever. For students looking to start their education in Computer
Science, go to the online Computer Science (Applied Computer Science) BS page to get started now.
